...and professional courtesy are what to expect from your Moose Gardens B&B hosts, any number of whom may be on hand: Garnett and Marya Morrow, the owners; their son, Garnett Jr.; their daughter, Salena, and 13 year old grandson, Thorin. (Marya's cat, Harry, and Thorin's dog, Lucky, complete the family listing but can't be held accountable to answer questions - courteously or not.)
Wanting you to "fall in love with the State (called by the natives " the Great Land" for good reason) every bit as much as we did," they're more than happy to share their knowledge and 'insider tips,' of which there's many - having lived in Alaska since 1975 - long enough to qualify as "sourdoughs."
Gardening... ...competitive gardening - is a major passion of the Morrow family.
They consider the growing season successful when they win a Grand Champion ribbon from the Alaska State fair.
When not gardening in the summer, the Morrows enjoy the abundant opportunities Alaska provides: fishing, sightseeing, hiking, camping, canoeing, bicycling and berry picking.
Year-round activities include wildlife viewing, bird watching, and travelling.
Winter activities include jigsaw puzzles (folks, it's cold out there!), viewing the Northern Lights, astronomy, cross country and down hill skiing, ice skating and snow machining.
Music and books are family necessities in any season. So is food. Garnett Sr. and Salena both love to cook and are ecstatic when a new recipe proves exceptional enough to be included in the Moose Gardens B&B repertoire. (The rest of the family thoroughly enjoys being their taste test panel!)
Wherever Garnett Sr. goes, the camera goes. However, he's learned to his sorrow when chasing fish and getting REALLY in to it - that cameras don't swim well.
Marya enthusiastically supports his photographic bent because she uses the outcome of his hobby for hers: oil painting - especially of Alaskan landscapes.
Garnett Jr. participates in hockey and soccer leagues and reads Calculus books for fun. When it's warm outside (summer) - it's never dark. So the avid astronomer must wait for winter. And Garnett Jr. is AVID - he's been known to be out with his telescope for hours at -10° F!
Salena [not pictured - having been too busy working on this web page to pose] goes dancing and bicycling (even in the winter when it takes snow tires to do it!), creates graphic art (and now web pages!) on her computer, and sculpts.
Thorin is learning to cook with his grandpa (it's a male bonding thing) and has won ribbons at the fair for his cookies and jams. He's "totally into" movies - especially comedies, video games and hanging out with his friends.
Lucky's main interest is winning a canine "Mr. Congeniality" award or, barring that - a tail wagging contest.
And Harry's idea of heaven is a full dish of cat food.
Garnett and Marya started Moose Gardens in the same home in which they'd raised their 3 children. They absolutely loved being hosts - and wanted facilities that met the desires and needs of their guests better. A secondary consideration was the expansion of their garden area. They discovered that nothing existed that met those exacting criteria. Consequently, a simple search for another house became a 4 year long process of B&B design and construction after finding a 21/2 acre site in south Anchorage with a spectacular view that enabled them to do both. And although Marya said it, all the Morrows mean it:
"We're excited about our new home, and know you'll enjoy it as much as we do."
